he Adventures of a Trapper Boy is based on the true story of the amazing life of Harold Gus Edwards who went from a trapper boy in the coal mines of Nova Scotia to being head of the Royal Canadian Air Force Overseas during World War II.Gus was born in Chorley, England. When his father lost his job as a miner there, he moved his family to Nova Scotia where they needed miners badly. While still a boy, Gus began to work underground as a trapper boy for ten hours a day, six days a week. Each night, he would study for two hours, then sleep for a while before he got up to study for another three hours before going off to the mines. Gus believed if you have a dream and want something badly enough, you will work to reach your goal.Flight was brand new in the early days of the last century, and Gus wanted to learn to fly more than anything. He read everything he could about it. When World War I began, he joined the British navy as an aviator cadet. During the war, as a fighter pilot, he was shot down, taken prisoner, escaped, and was recaptured. After the war, he flew airplanes again as part of the aerial mapping project to take pictures of vast areas of Canada. By the third year of World War II, Gus was an air marshal in the Royal Canadian Air Force. No one else before him had risen so rapidly through the ranks.
